COURSE CONTENT:
● What is Comedy? What do we find funny? Why? Definition of genres, styles and approaches to comedy, their contexts and the different media.
● The Grotesque: Exploration of grotesque types in performance, and how Commedia can help us to develop contemporary performances rooted in our culture, our language, our experience and our stories.
● Social Types and Stereotypes An exploration of social types and stereotypes in developing characters for performance. An exploration of satire, parody and caricature.
● Politics, Ideology and Entertainment: This part of the course will look at the 'subversive power of laughter' and more specifically political satire and farce.
● Improvisation: Tempo-rhythm and comic timing are paramount. Physical actions, gestures, lines, and jokes are all governed by the same ‘rule’. But what is the balance between a tight structure and improvisation?
