WELCOME to commedia dell'arte

With Dr Chiara D'Anna

An online space to explore all things Commedia...

This online space has been created to offer students, actors, tutors, researchers, scholars and anyone interested in Commedia dell'Arte a virtual library to find out more about the history and legacy of Commedia dell'Arte. As a 'curator', my vision is to transform this site in a virtual laboratory where people can not only find information and acquire new skills, but also contribute in sharing their perspective and their work. Your ideas, suggestions, contributions, questions or even 'provocations' are welcome! This is a space for everybody and belongs to everybody interested in Commedia dell'Arte especially its legacy in contemporary performance. If you are interested in sharing essays, articles, live and recoded performances, workshops or interviews: get in touch!

WHAT IS COMMEDIA DELL'ARTE?
An Introduction

By Dr Chiara D'Anna

Balli di Sfessania by Jacques Callot (1621)

Commedia dell’arte is a complex and heterogeneous theatrical phenomenon originated in Italy in the 16th century. It flourished throughout all Europe for centuries changing and adapting to the demands and taste of different audiences in different epochs.

Often Commedia dell’Arte is described as an outdoor popular form of street theatre based on improvised scenarios between masked stock characters. This is partly true but not accurate. This definition is too superficial to explain the complexity of Commedia dell’Arte, its longevity and the massive impact it had on the development of European theatre.

Commedia dell’Arte can be better defined as a ‘cultural phenomenon’: the result of a meeting between popular culture (oral tradition) & high culture (written tradition/literature): a fertile and exciting moment of ‘reconciliation between opposites’.
